Bacteriuria following Foley catheterization after gynecological and obstetrical surgery

چکیده
The use of indwelling urethral catheterization to drain bladder after gynecological and obstetrical surgery is customary. It provides rest to the bladder and avoids urinary retention in the post operative period. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common nosocomial infections accounting for up to 40% of all hospital acquired infections. Eighty percent of these are associated with the use of urinary catheters. Risk of infection is about 3-10% for each day of catheterization. Infection occurs when bacteria reach the bladder by one of the two routes. They gain access intraluminally by entering the catheter system at the cathetercollecting tube junction. Patients’ own bowel flora may colonize the periurethral area and reach bladder via the external surface of the catheter, especially in females due to anatomical proximity. Experts have suggested the following criteria for diagnosing bacteriuria from catheterized patients: 102 CFU/ml or greater from patients undergoing intermittent catheterization and any detectable growth from those with an indwelling catheter. When these are associated with pyuria and clinical symptoms it represents UTI. Bacteriuria following Foley catheterization after gynecological and obstetrical surgery

Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Radical Prostatectomy: Comparison of 2-Day and More than 2-Day Prophylaxis
The efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis in radical prostatectomy (RP) remains to be established. We retrospectively compared the occurrence of perioperative infections after RP between the 2 different antibiotic protocols. This study involved 428 cases of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP). After excluding patients who had no perioperative urine culture data, 313 consecutive patients who u...

In this survey, made to determine instances of bacteriuria occurring in hospitalized patients who had undergone catheterization, 259 urine specimens were taken from 103 patients admitted to three hospitals in Tehran. Of the 73 patients who had no urinary tract infection or contamination, 40 (54.8%) developed bacteriuria at the end of catheterization. Incidence of bacteriuria in patients un...
متن کاملA meta-analysis comparing suprapubic and transurethral catheterization for bladder drainage after abdominal surgery.
BACKGROUND Although bladder drainage is widely used for general surgical patients undergoing laparotomy, there is little consensus on whether suprapubic or transurethral catheterization is better. METHOD A systematic database search was undertaken to find all studies of suprapubic catheterization. Randomized controlled trials were identified for inclusion. Endpoints for analysis were bacteriu...
متن کاملThe impact of urinary bladder catheterisation after ureterorenoscopic stone removal on the postoperative course
Introduction The most frequent reason for ureterorenoscopy is the necessity to remove calculi from the ureter and/or kidney. After completing this procedure the Foley catheter is inserted in the bladder. The aim of the study is to show whether catheterisation of the bladder after ureterorenoscopic stone removal in patients with a low-risk of complications is necessary and indicated. Material ...
متن کاملAntimicrobial prophylaxis for catheter-associated bacteriuria.
We evaluated short-term systemic antimicrobial prophylaxis for catheter-associated bacteriuria in women undergoing elective gynecological operations in a prospective, controlled, double-masked study. Nine of 100 placebo-treated patients acquired bacteriuria during catheterization compared with 3 of 96 of the drug-treated group. However, at the time of hospital discharge, clean-voided urine spec...
